So, I really have a bee in my bonnet about this movie blog thing, it turns out. However, I am having a hell of a time deciding on a name. My companions for 4th-of-July fun yesterday were kind enough to indulge in some brainstorming, and then I've done some more this morning instead of, you know, working, and I have a bunch of ideas which I am totally unable to settle on one of. So, if I may request still further indulgence, I present a list here, and I ask you to either vote on your favorite, or say: "Silly robot. None of those are quite right. Here is the perfect name for you, which I have thought of!" and then I will give you cookies.
The site will consist of my usual lowbrow yet strangely picky reviews of horror, sci-fi, kung fu, cult, everything trashy and psychotronic - you know the drill. So the name should evoke that kind of thing. If that's possible. Here are the possibilities so far:
Back of the Vault Reviews
Bottom of the Vault Reviews
Gutter Popcorn, GutterCorn
The Gutter Snob
Don't Push That Button (this is an attempt to evoke the "Science gone TOO FAR!" theme of many B movies, with the button in this case being the Play button, except, maybe, my needing to explain this means this is not a good name? I just don't know anymore.)
The Scream Queen
The Screaming Screen
(I have briefly opened up the comments to all comers, since the Typekey thing seems to be acting up and, if you are kind enough to respond to this, you shouldn't have to wait around for gratification. Comments will be unmoderated until 8:00am tomorrow - after that, back to the approval system. Thanks!)
Posted by hilatron at July 5, 2005 10:49 AM | TrackBackHow about "Screen: My Calls"
Uh, I dunno, lemme think some more.
Posted by: EV at July 5, 2005 11:13 AMOf those, I like Gutter Popcorn the best.
Posted by: themis at July 5, 2005 11:28 AMI am not too excited about any of the candidates. Not that I have any good alternatives, because I am lame like that. I am thinking along the lines of play on/quote from/refernce to obscure movie in your genre, however. You may have already tried this direction however - let me know before I go too far on this track.
Posted by: captain gb at July 5, 2005 02:11 PM"Squeam Screen" or "Gutter Classics."
Posted by: Auntie Jean at July 5, 2005 03:47 PMI like "Gutter Corn."
Posted by: Jess at July 5, 2005 04:09 PMHow about "Framed?" Framing?
Stars of the Silver Scream?
Cult Corn? Corn Cult?
I think I need a glass of wine for this . . .
Posted by: Doombot at July 5, 2005 04:19 PM"Gutter-flavored topping"?
Posted by: EV at July 5, 2005 04:36 PMI have it! "Trailer Trash!"
Do I get cookies?
Posted by: Doombot at July 5, 2005 05:48 PMAlas, Doombot, someone else got there first:
http://www.thetrailertrash.com/
And I'm not sure what the story is here but someone is sure pissed:

Captain, go nuts with the quotes. I was thinking along those lines until I remembered that "They're coming to get you, Barbara" was already taken and then nothing else seemed as good and I ran out of steam.
Posted by: Hilatron at July 5, 2005 07:08 PMRank n' Reelin'
Reel Deal
Screen Bores (eh, screen doors? Never mind.)
SplinterMission
In The Can
Outer Takes
Shock Stock
Scene Spleen
Yeah, I definitely need wine. Gin and tonic, maybe.
Posted by: Doombot at July 5, 2005 07:56 PMNo, I have NOT had gin and tonic. Or wine. But I'd like one of each in lieu of cookies, please.
Two quotes to consider, though:
What does the giant silver robot say in The Day The Earth Stood Still? I think you could call it that. Something something "vlatu" something?
Alternatively, call it The Wrong Vampire, based on that wonderful scene from Roman Polanski's The Fearless Vampire Killers, where the guy tries to stop the Jewish vampire with a cross and he grins and says, "Oi, have you got the wrong vampire."
Or you could call it Screaming Room.
Posted by: Doombot at July 5, 2005 08:14 PMSo, no one likes The Scream Queen? It was kind of growing on me, as a combination of familiar phrase + shorthand for "girl who reviews horror movies." Too trite maybe?
Anyway, I was thinking about quotes. What do you think of "In the Night, In the Dark?" It's from the fabulous speech by Mrs. Dudley in The Haunting, as she shows Eleanor her room:
“I don't stay after I set out dinner,” Mrs. Dudley went on. “Not after it begins to get dark. I leave before dark comes. … We live over in the town, six miles away. … So there won't be anyone around if you need help. … We couldn't even hear you, in the night. … No one could. No one lives any nearer than that. … In the night. In the dark.”
Posted by: Hilatron at July 6, 2005 12:41 PM...Sofa Gothic? Corpse on the Couch?
Posted by: Hilatron at July 6, 2005 01:07 PMI have to say I quite like guttercorn. but that may be is just cause i like gutters and i really like corn. my second vote is for screaming room.
Posted by: tree at July 6, 2005 07:30 PMSofa Gothic is nice, Tron.
Posted by: Courtney at July 7, 2005 08:16 AMI like 'In the Night, In the Dark', but mainly I am dropping in here to say that while I was in favor of the quote based name, I have no actual in depth knowledge of the films in question or any quotes contained within in - I'm sorry if I'm a disapointment! And, I have too much work to do (wah!). So, I will have to limit my participation to voting.
Posted by: captain gb at July 8, 2005 11:22 AMHey, how about Scream Test?
Posted by: Doombot at July 8, 2005 06:13 PMI just stumbled onto your site and was very intrigued with your current site and the prospect of the movie site (especially since I have been proclaiming my long-term love of zombie films to a stunned, silent blog-reading audience). Call it what you will, I'll give it a read...but if I have to choose, I'd go with Gutter Snob or Back of the Vault Reviews.
Cheers!
Thank you, everyone, for your input and brainstorming help, which I am truly grateful for even though I am now of course totally going to ignore it, ha ha. Are you sure you know why you bother?
I like "Gutter Popcorn" a lot, but it does not feel quite right. The puns on Scream were also hot contenders, but "Scream Test" and "Screaming Room" both seem to have other incarnations.
So, I'm picking the choice that got the least love of them all: Sofa Gothic. I sneaked up a blogspot site and threw up some of the reviews that have previously appeared here, and it feels right and good and like that off-the-rack dress that magically fits just so even though usually the garment industry seems to think you are three sizes apart on your top and your bottom. You know?

Posted by: Hilatron at July 9, 2005 12:51 PMRussell, if you return, I tried to comment on your site but I couldn't sign in. (Perhaps this explains your silent audience?) Thanks for stopping by - and claim your love of zombies without apology, my horrorgeek brother! You have nothing to be ashamed of - well, except for ranking NotLD THIRD!!!!!! in the Romero zombie canon. Gasp! Shock! Horror!
Posted by: Hilatron at July 9, 2005 12:58 PMThanks for the alert! In my effort to stop the influx of comments from PokerPal and Gamblingforthosestupidenoughtoclickhere, I have boxed myself into a corner. I'll work it out. By the way, even though Sofa Gothic didn't jump out at me at first, now that you've claimed it, I like it a lot.
